Harper's April '98

Edward Penfield, magazine poster, 1898 · lithographic poster

What it is

Edward Penfield’s poster for the April 1898 number of Harper’s, a golfer addressing the ball in argyle stockings.

Why it matters

Penfield was art director at Harper’s and drew its monthly posters, flat colour and hard outline, through the 1890s.

What to notice

Behind the golfer a farmer is ploughing the next field with a horse; spring is work for one of them.

April belongs to whoever gets out first.
