Portraits, the Grand Match, and the Clubhouse Wall · The Rules, Illustrated
Regelementen van Kolf (The Rules of Kolf)
anonymous Dutch printer, 18th century · broadside
What it is
An eighteenth-century Dutch sheet setting out the regulations of kolf.
Why it matters
The house’s rules collection begins here rather than with Crombie: this is the written game, a century before the Victorians made a comedy of it.
What to notice
It is a printed broadside, meant to be pinned up where the game was played and pointed at during disputes.
The rulebook has always been a weapon as much as a guide.
