Sports on a Frozen River

Aert van der Neer, oil on canvas, c. 1660 · oil on canvas

What it is

A frozen river crowded with skaters, sledges, and kolf players under van der Neer’s famous low winter light.

Why it matters

The Met’s canvas is the fully realised version of the scene this house opens with — the old game as one activity among many on a cold, busy afternoon.

What to notice

The kolf players are not the subject. They are simply there, the way golfers are always simply there.

The game was social before it was serious.
