The Dutch on the Ice · The Old Game
A Scene on the Ice near a Town
Hendrick Avercamp, oil on panel, 1615 · oil on panel
What it is
A whole town emptied onto the frozen water: skaters, sleighs, kolf players, and a great pale sky over all of it.
Why it matters
The most complete statement of the winter-game panorama, and one of the few scans in the house big enough to hang at size.
What to notice
The horizon sits low and the sky takes two thirds — the weather is the real subject.
A cold day is only a problem if you stay indoors.
