Skaters, Kolf Players and a Couple on the Ice

Ludolf Bakhuizen, pen and ink, before c. 1700 · pen and ink drawing

What it is

A sheet of pen studies by Ludolf Bakhuizen, before about 1700: skaters, a couple, a boy and kolf players in two rows.

Why it matters

Bakhuizen was a marine painter; this is his notebook for the small figures he put on his frozen harbours.

What to notice

Top left, a player has his club raised high behind his head; in the row below, two others line up a shot.

The swing is the first thing anyone draws.
