The Dutch on the Ice · The Old Game
A Girl with a Kolf Club and Her Mother
Netherlandish engraver, c. 1792–1800 · engraving
What it is
A domestic interior: a girl holding a kolf club, her mother beside her.
Why it matters
The quietest piece in the house and one of the most useful — evidence that the game was a household object before it was an institution.
What to notice
The club is scaled to the child. Someone made it for her.
Long before the members’ bar, it was a toy in a front room.
