Kolf Player on the Ice (Figures à la mode, no. 11)

Romeyn de Hooghe, etching, c. 1670 to 1685 · etching

What it is

Plate eleven of Figures à la mode, Romeyn de Hooghe’s etched series of Dutch fashions, c. 1670 to 1685: a skater in winter dress with a kolf club and ball.

Why it matters

A fashion plate is the proof that kolf had become something you dressed for.

What to notice

His left hand is in a muff and his right holds the club like a walking stick; the ball waits at his skate.

Golfers have been dressing for the photograph since before there were photographs.
