The Dutch on the Ice · The Old Game
Skaters and Kolf Players by the Farms
Esaias van de Velde, engraving, 1614 · engraving
What it is
An engraving after Esaias van de Velde, published by Claes Jansz. Visscher, of skaters and kolf players in front of a row of farmhouses.
Why it matters
Visscher sold these sheets by the series to Amsterdam buyers who wanted their own countryside on the wall.
What to notice
A child is pushed in a sledge in the foreground while the players work the ice behind.
The game was a neighbour before it was a sport.
