Esaias van de Velde, oil on panel, 1623 · oil on panel

What it is

Esaias van de Velde’s 1623 panel of a farmhouse and a frozen river, held by the National Gallery in London.

Why it matters

Van de Velde was one of the first Dutch painters to make an ordinary winter road the whole subject.

What to notice

Lower left, a figure carries a kolf club down to the ice; nobody else in the scene has noticed him.
