Kolf Players by an Inn on the Water

Jacob Cats (1741 to 1799), drawing, 1770 · drawing

What it is

Jacob Cats’ 1770 drawing of an inn beside the water, with kolf players gathered near the house.

Why it matters

By the late eighteenth century kolf belonged to the inn: the court was outside and the drink was inside.

What to notice

The players are small, by the fence in front of the inn, half hidden in the shade of the tree.

The nineteenth hole is older than the first.
