January: Kolf Players on the Ice
Jan van de Velde (II), etching, c. 1608 to 1618 · etching
What it is
The January plate from Jan van de Velde’s series of the twelve months, titled IANUARIUS, with Latin verses below.
Why it matters
When a printmaker had to pick one activity to stand for the whole of January, he picked kolf.
What to notice
Two players swing on the ice at the right; a sledge and a crowd crossing the bridge fill the rest.
Winter is a season for people with clubs.
