Kolf Players on the Ice by a Dovecote

Jan van de Velde (II), etching, 1616 · etching

What it is

An etching of a frozen waterway with a dovecote on the bank, a footbridge, and a group of kolf players at the right.

Why it matters

Jan van de Velde etched the Dutch countryside in small series for collectors, and kolf turns up in them as part of the weather.

What to notice

Follow the bridge to the right: the players are under it, mid-swing, with a sledge pulled past them.

The first courses were never built; they froze.
