The Dutch on the Ice · The Old Game
Kolven op het IJs (Kolf on the Ice)
Netherlandish printmaker, 1763–1826 · print
What it is
A print from the Koninklijk Oudheidkundig Genootschap collection showing kolf being played on the ice.
Why it matters
The plainest possible statement of the house’s founding subject, and large enough to hang properly.
What to notice
The players stand well apart — kolf was played toward a distant target post, not into a hole.
Change the target and you change the whole game.
