The Dutch on the Ice · The Old Game
Lime Kilns near Hillegom, with Kolf Players
Dutch, maker unrecorded, pen and wash, 18th century · pen and wash drawing
What it is
An eighteenth-century pen and wash drawing of lime kilns near Hillegom with kolf players on the ground in front of them.
Why it matters
Kilns, smoke and spoil heaps make a working ground, and the players use it anyway.
What to notice
Lower right, one player stoops to the ball while another waits his turn with a club over his shoulder.
Any flat ground will do.
