Kolf Players by an Antique Ruin

Cornelis van Poelenburch, pen and ink, 1622 · pen and ink drawing

What it is

A pen and ink drawing of a ruined arcade with two kolf players at the right edge, signed and dated by Poelenburch.

Why it matters

Poelenburch was working in Rome in the early 1620s, and he set Dutch kolf players among the ruins he drew there.

What to notice

The players stand at the right, past the last broken arch, where a wall turns into open ground.

Every ruin makes a good hazard.
