Boy Playing Golf

Gerard ter Borch the Elder, drawing, c. 1610–1620 · drawing

What it is

Gerard ter Borch the Elder’s drawing of a boy with a kolf club, made in the first decades of the seventeenth century.

Why it matters

A second great Dutch name on the wall, and the earliest drawing here of a single player rather than a crowd.

What to notice

It is a study, not a picture — drawn to learn the pose, and it keeps the looseness of that.

Before the game had institutions it had children copying adults.
