The Dutch on the Ice · The Old Game
Winter Landscape near a Town with Kolf Players
Aert van der Neer, oil on panel, c. 1650–1655 · oil on panel
What it is
Kolf players and horse-drawn sleighs outside a Dutch town under van der Neer’s winter sky.
Why it matters
The house already hangs a small van der Neer it can only sell as a file. This is the same painter, the same subject, at a resolution that finally reaches the wall.
What to notice
The town is a silhouette and the sky does all the work — his whole method in one panel.
The right scan turns a footnote into a centrepiece.
