Formal Garden with Kolf Players

after Hans Vredeman de Vries, engraving, c. 1587 · engraving

What it is

An engraving after Hans Vredeman de Vries from his book of garden designs, c. 1587: a walled parterre laid out as a maze.

Why it matters

Vredeman drew ideal gardens for the rich, and he put kolf in them as one of the things a good garden is for.

What to notice

The players are tiny, at the top of the garden near the house; the maze is the main event.

Design the ground first and the game will find it.
