Le Golf de Font-Romeu
Leonetto Cappiello, lithographic poster, 1929 · lithographic poster
What it is
Leonetto Cappiello’s poster for the golf course at Font-Romeu, high in the French Pyrenees.
Why it matters
Cappiello effectively invented the modern advertising poster — a single luminous figure against flat dark ground — and here he aims it at golf.
What to notice
The background is nearly black so the figure detonates off it. That trick is his, and everyone has stolen it since.
Sell the feeling, not the field.
